Intel Job Shadow

Today I got the opportunity to job shadow a family friend, Jan Ohman, who is the Editorial Director of Employee Communications at Intel. Basically she is in charge of a team who produces Circuit, Intel's intranet for their 82,000 employees with news stories, corporate videos, and other content.

Some highlights I learned while at Intel:
  • Intel offers it's employees free coffee and soda!
  • Intel Twitters
  • Intel is the #1 2008 Corporate Citizen
  • Intel has accounts with Facebook and Dreamworks
  • Intel is very pro-diversity and ergonomics focused
I got to sit in on a Circuit meeting with Jeremy Schultz, David Spencer, Krista Vasquez and Philip Davis. Some things in the meeting that sparked my attention:
  • Focus Group Research Break Downs (I felt like I was back in GB301)
  • Discussions about Intel's plasma TVs (they are attempting to go paperless - Bentley is the same way) and how to improve their effectiveness
    • Local news
    • Placement
    • Internal news
    • Emergency information
    • TV/Gaming
  • Discussions about Intel's Press Releases (and how blogging has become almost more effective - reminded me of Isreal's book - Naked Conversations)
Did I mention I got a sneak peek at Intel's Q3 video?

All in all an awesome experience. I got to meet a ton of people and had the chance to network. Hopefully something will come out of today!

Eyebrows

Tomorrow I am having coffee and then shadowing a family friend at Intel. She works with a team that produces Intel's intra social media marketing program, Circuit. I am super excited for this opportunity. This is a great networking opportunity and hopefully an awesome job will come out of this. Intel is #1 Best Corporate Citizens and it would truly be an honor to work at such an amazing company.

However, the downside of having this awesome experience, was I attempted to fix my eyebrows after living 10 days on a houseboat and failed miserably...

HELP!?!

Thoughts on Heaven

I was fortunate enough to get a copy of Randy Alcorn's 50 Days of Heaven: Reflections That Bring Eternity to Light, while I was working as a lifeguard at First Call's Family Retreat at Wildhorse Canyon a couple of weeks ago. So far I have loved reading it and gaining more perspective on Heaven and what happens after I die. Something I hardly ever give any thought too.

Last night while I was reading Day 20: Christ's Resurrection Body: The Model For Ours, which focuses on Philippians 3:20-21, "The Lord Jesus Christ...will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body." I learned that our bodies will be resurrected in new and improved physical forms. Not just ghostly forms, glittering around Heaven. This was exciting to think about. But I did have one question floating around my head.

Will we still have scars in Heaven?

I know when Jesus was resurrected He showed His hands and feet which bared the scars of His crucifiction on them to His apostles. But will we?

The reason why I'm pondering this is because, when I was 13 I was in a ski accident and had a titanium rod inserted into my left femur bone. With this came a huge scar that runs down the entire length of my thigh. This scar plays a huge part in my identity, something I cherish and reminds me constantly that certain luxuries (like walking) shouldn't be taken for granted.

Now, I'm stuck wondering if in Heaven will I still have my titanium rod? I don't think so, I trust that God will return me to my original form. However, my scar I would like to keep. And I also look forward to living in a body where my shoulders don't hurt constantly from overuse from years of water polo and swimming.

Oh glorious day.

I'm Back

From Houseboat Camp 2008!

I stole this picture from Tres via Janet Fraiser.

Some highlights of camp were:
  • Watching Sam just off the platform
  • Laughing so hard with Jenni, Laurie, Janette that Jenni had contractions
  • Watching Frank do a front flip off the party barge to school his son, Cass
  • Listening to an amazing speaker, Nick L, talking about the book of Jonah and asking "What's your gourd?" about 10 times
  • Learning how to wakesurf
  • Catching up with past students, I can't believe I have girls who are going to be juniors and seniors in high school
  • Having an outstanding replacement BK What?!? in Jen G.
  • Finishing up Eragon and starting the 2nd book of the Inheritance Trilogy

I'm leaving on a ski boat...

Just wanted to let you all know I won't be blogging for the next 10 days or so. I'll be helping out at Sunset Presbyterian's Houseboat Camp! Hope you guys have a wonderful couple of days. And keep us all in your prayers, safety and open hearts, and TONS of energy. Thank you so much!

Here is a picture from Houseboat Camp two years ago. We were tied to a tree and there was a big gust of wind and we ripped the tree out and ended up pulling it onto on of the freshman girl's boats. Oh fun adventures!

Shh! It's a secret...

...I'm dying my hair pink for Houseboat Camp! I can't keep it a secret any longer and since not a ton of people read my blog I figured I could tell the world without actually telling the world.

The last time I dyed my hair was Spring Break sophomore year of college so like 2.5 years ago. And for those of you who knew me in middle and high school that is a LONG time for me. It is about time for a new color.

Plus it is only for this week, the 10 days I'm at camp and then when ever I get time to dye it back to a regular color for job interviews.

As for the job interview front. Not going as well as I though. I'm personally blaming the economy! I spend time hunting online on monster, careerbuilder, and craigslist and after an hour I decide that a nap seems more productive. Every job wants more experience (like 5-10 years). Oh well, I got a second round interview with a marketing firm when I get back from camp. Also, I am meeting a family friend to shadow her at Intel for the the morning and get coffee with her after camp. Plus the week after camp I'm having coffee with my mentor at Nike. So maybe something fruitful will come from those meetings.

Plus, I applied for this kick ass job at the Portland Art Museum. And I'm totally mentally glamorizing it in my mind, all while trying not to get my hopes up.

Anyways, PINK HAIR! If you could have any hair color what would it be and why?

Below

Below this post you will see two other posts. One has a post card that was sent to PostSecret.com and the other is a video. Both pretty much summarize my life goals. And since it has been awhile since I last posted. I've been pretty much in a non-blogging mood/been camping for the 4th of July and haven't had access to internet. I thought I would share some of my current inspiration. Enjoy!

Now, what inspires you?

I hope it never changes either!

What's Your Junk?

My Junk is a song in the Broadway hit Spring Awakening. But I'm not talking about that kind of junk. This week I had to clean some space by the side of my house to allow the cable get to get to part of the wall and I removed:

  • 2 wooden ladders
  • 2 crab pots
  • 2 lobster pots
  • an old bicycle
  • an old motorcycle
  • various pieces of wood, pipe and terra cotta pots
Then today I had to help my brother clear at the garage a bit so we could get our camper out for our weekend camping trip next weekend for 4th of July and we removed:
  • a bag full of roller blades
  • various old back packs
  • old projects from my mom's old business
  • my dad's old weight set
Minus the roller blades which I was pretty excited to find. I'm pretty sure we are never going to use any of these things ever again. And I find myself wondering...why are they still here?

So my question to you is, what's your junk? And why do you still keep it?

1st Real Interview!

Tomorrow I have my first real interview for my post-college marketing career search. Super excited but a little nervous. I called the schedule my interview today and was expecting to say they were busy for two weeks or something and instead I got, "can you come in tomorrow at 1:30?" I'm super excited about having the chance to interview at this company. So wish me luck!

Things To Do:
  1. Print out a couple copies of my resume
  2. Print out my emails about the job
  3. Print out a couple copies of my list of references
  4. Find my Bentley Alumni notebook
  5. Find my portfolio
  6. Figure out/lay out my outfit for tomorrow

Swim Suit Stress

Sometimes I amaze myself about how stressed out I get over little things.

My current stressor is finding swim suits for lifeguarding this summer and Houseboat Camp. After investigating my current stock of swim suits I realized I need about three new swim suits. 1 more for work and 2 for Houseboat camp.

Today my mom and I went to Nordstrom Rack and the Nike Employee store. Neither of them have decent swim suits. I'm starting to stress out about spending roughly $90 for three swimsuits.

Here is what I'm looking for:
  • One piece
  • Competition cut
  • Size 30
  • Non-polyester
  • Swim suit
  • With no color preference
That is all. I think I feel better getting that off my chest.

The Tides Have Turned

Tomorrow my best friend, Beckie Kruse, is leaving Oregon to go to Auburn for graduate school. For four years I have been leaving her to fly to the East Coast for school and today for the first time I said good-bye to her as she gets ready to fly to the South for school. I know she will have an awesome experience there and she will be in good hands. But as selfish as it sounds: I DON'T WANT HER TO GO! Here are my reasons why:

  1. She has been my Houseboat bunk buddy for the past 3 years.

  2. We both worked at THPRD during the summers/holidays.

  3. We are wakeboard buddies.

  4. Sunset Presbyterian attenders.

  5. She is my "what not to wear"/how to do make up/be a girl go to person.

  6. She gets my sense of humor and understands my thought process.

  7. She orders my Starbucks for me.

  8. Did I mention she was my best friend.

How am I going to survive this summer with out her?

Please pray as she moves, registers for classes, gets settled into work and school. And pray for me as I let go of her. Also, if you want to be my friend and fill my Beckie-less void please let me know. Thanks!

Back to Blogging

My best friend from Bentley, Jade, came to visit me for the past week. Which explains my lack of blogging. We did some pretty cool stuff:
All in all a super busy week! I had a good time showing my friend around town. But I'm ready to get back into the groove of things, working, looking for a "real" job and saving some money!

"Unemployed" College Graduate

So I'm not really unemployed. I'm currently working as a Head Guard at THPRD. A place I have worked on and off for the past six years. I'm not using my hard earned college degree but I am making more than minimum wage. The good thing is I work mornings and nights which gives me 6 hours (12PM-6PM) to look for, apply and interview for "real" post-college jobs. This morning was our first day of summer inservice (so my 6th summer inservice). And as I layed down to fall asleep I had a bit of a mental freak out.

a. I'm a college graduate and I'm still doing the same thing I was doing when I was 15

b. All my friends graduated and got "real" jobs and aren't going to be there.

c. I'm too old to be still doing this.

e. Who am I going to hang out with at work.

d. Etc.

On the plus side:

a. I get way more flexibility with work than anyone else I know.

b. Who wouldn't want to spend their final summer being a super cool lifeguard?

c. Who really needs a "real" job when the economy is so bad? I should be thankful to at least be employed and making $$$.

Playing Hide and Seek with God

During my down time at Wildhorse Canyon this weekend (aka not lifeguarding during free time) I got the chance to listen to an awesome speaker, Bill Paige. Who gave a great example of God. Paige talked about how since he is a grandfather his grandson loves to play hide-and-seek. So while his grandson is counting, Paige hides behind a curtain. And when his grandson comes looking for him, he wants his grandson to find him because that would make his grandson so happy. God is the same way, He wants us to find Him. There is nothing separating us from God but a curtain. But that those who actively seek Him will find Him. And this finding of God is so special. It really brings joy to God heart as well as to the person seeking Him. Just like when Paige's grandson finds him.

I was at Wildhorse lifeguarding for an awesome ministry called First Call Family Ministries. Which supports first responders (firefighters, police, and EMS professionals and their families), while showing them God's love. Here are some statistics about these professionals:
  • Divorce rates as high as 84%
  • Suicide rates can be as high as 6X the national average (there is also a correlation between children of first responders and suicide)
  • Significantly higher levels of alcohol, substance abuse and domestic violence
  • Cynicism, hyper-vigilance, and isolationism become their world
  • On top of putting their own personal safety on the line every day in order to protect and serve our communities

Makes you want to hug the next police officer, firefighter or EMS personal right?

Wildhorse Weekend

This weekend I will be traveling with Dr. Janette Green to Young Life's Wildhorse camp in Antelope, Oregon to work as a lifeguard for a weekend retreat for paramedics, police, firefighters, and various military people. I'll be back Sunday night (hopefully before 5:30PM to watch the Celtics dominate the Lakers in game two of the NBA Championships). Please pray for safe travels and an awesome weekend. I'm really hoping to reconnect with God since things have been a little chaotic with finals, Bahamas, graduation, cross-country roadtrip, and reorganization of my life. Need to get in a new groove and hopefully this weekend will help kick that off.

An Apology Letter

Dear Box of Nail Polish Under my Bathroom Sink,

I am sorry for letting you go to waste. But it is time for me to grow up and realize that it is time to throw you away. Your colors have separated. Your gloppy and dry. Let's be honest. Many of you cost 99 cents when I was in middle school and you chipped away cheaply then. Now 10 years later, you don't have a chance in hell.

My love for you started at an early age. From my mom painting my nails (and my younger brothers, until the other 5 year old boys on his t-ball team made fun of him) to bicycle rides up to the Bethany ACE Hardware store when it was built when I was in 6th grade before it became a Walgreens to buy a new color of Wet-n-Wild every week with my limited savings. Some of you arrived in my box before middle school, hand me downs from my mother in an attempt to keep me out of her own nail polish bag of goodies. Some of you came from presents of family friends who had know idea what to get a crazy tomboy or from close friends who truely understood my passion for nail polish.

I can honestly say I changed the color of my nails more times than the color of my hair in middle school and high school. Which is truely saying somethign. You shined through my odd and ever changing fashion statements. I'm pretty sure I went an entire year in 7th grade with my thumbs always a different shade than the rest of my other fingernails. I will always remember you amazing box of colors.

As I admire each of you individually and remember for the most part the moods and reasons for purchasing each shade. I'm pleading with you to forgive me for letting you all good rotten. I'm still the same girl. I still will have crazy electric colors when I walk into a business meeting. I will still repaint my nails on a monthly if not weekly basis. I still am attracted like a raven to shiny things including glitter nail polish - I swear half of the 50 or so bottles that now sit in the trash had glitter in them. Please forgive me. I had so many plans for us.

But I'm a grow up now. I need nail polish that will withstand the test of time. They can't chip when I'm opening a soda can or impatiently tapping my fingers on a desk. I need strong polish the like woman I am. Yes, the new polish can be blue, or green, or purple. But strong and 99 cent Wet-n-Wild, you can't be that polish to me anymore. Once again, I'm sorry. I truely loved you all. Thank you so much for helping me express my individual personality during middle school. You were such a cheap little blessing to me. And for that I am truely thankful.

Love Always,

jenna

Sex and the City

This afternoon my mom and I went to see Sex and the City. Really good movie for a chick flick only if you watched and enjoyed the TV series. (That is my review) Is someone who has seen a couple of episodes (not enough to be a fanatic or anything). I did like the throw backs to the TV series. For example (don't worry this isn't a spoiler) when Carrie is trying on old clothes while she is packing she wears the skirt from the opening scenes of the TV show. Stuff like that - I'm sure I missed a whole lot more. But whatever.

The more interesting part (could be seen as more depressing maybe) is that while I was watching the movie I realized how few real good girl friends I actually have. Girls that would drop everything they are doing to help me. I'm super appreciative of the ones I have don't get me wrong. But maybe because we are all graduating from college (or recently been out of college) and are still confused about our own lives or in my case I have good friends here on the West Coast and good friends on the East Coast that aren't connected. I feel a little lost when it comes to girl friends. Kind of sad I know. But when I look at my mom she has had a great group of ladies, who have supported one another through marriages, divorces, pregnancies and teenagers. Some from college and some from when we moved to Oregon and I feel like I don't have that and I wish I did.

Maybe that is my own fault for being a tough, independent, tomboy (probably). But I hope someday, when I'm older I will be able to look back and say "wow, I am lucky."

Going along with this I would like to point out I have amazing guy friends. But it's not the same. And over last summer, Thanksgiving and Christmas, I went through a whole re-evaluation of my friendships and only wanted to surround myself with those positive people what really wanted what was best for me and not just kids I grew up with. A decision I still stand by.

So my question to all of you is, do you have a Miranda, Samatha, and Charlette? If so, who and how do you support one another?

Lifeguards Needed

Quick post. Does anyone know any lifeguards in the Oregon area who would be interested in helping out at a Wildhorse retreat for first responders, EMS, police, fire fighters, and people in the service. It's the weekend of June 6th-8th. Let me know. Thanks!

Today

...I am still unpacking and reorganizing my life. I got an email about a new program initiative from Nike about college graduates working in China. And thought about how cool it would be to work in China and live with my dad for awhile. Especially since our bonding trip driving cross country. The deadline is already over, but because of the earthquake and my dad's pull in Nike I decided I am still going to try and apply. Worse thing that can happen is they say is "I'm sorry, you are pass the deadline," right? So I looked at my resume for the first time since graduation and realized. I AM A COLLEGE GRADUATE!?! I don't have a campus address anymore. I have a permant one. Better known as my mom's house until I can get a real job and save up some money to move out. I don't have an expected date of graduation anymore. I had a real solid date. I'm not date-present anymore on any of my college jobs or activies. It is now date-05/08. I guess updating my resume made me realize how final college is. Granted I want to go to grad school in the next 2-5 years. But for now college is over and I still haven't posted my Bahamas, graduation, and road trip pictures on facebook yet!

Anyways, so all this official life updating via my paper life resume got me thinking about my blog. I'm no longer an oblivious college senior. I'm something else. I just don't know what yet. Thus change in my blog title until further notice. If anyone has an suggestions let me know.

Back in Oregon

I'm back in Oregon and currently unpacking and re-organizing my life. So I once again might be missing from the blogging life. If you want to see me let me know.

Greetings from MO

So we weren't able to meet up with dad's friend Jennifer. Which was a bummer because I would have liked to meet another woman who does business. But she did add me to her linkedin contacts which I thought was super nice of her. We did see the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, which dad enjoyed. He has wanted to go there since he was a kid so I think he was glad he could cross that off his bucket list. The highlight of my day yesterday was the improntu stop in St. Lewis to see the St. Lewis Arch. Pretty cool! I think it is one of the 7 Wonders of America or something. But we took some good pictures and I got to actually touch it. Today we plan on stopping in Topeka, KS to see a 1928B Harley Davidson that dad is getting restored there. Pretty awesome stuff since dad has been talking about getting it restored since I was in 6th grade. There are also apparently a ton of wineries in MO so dad said if we cross any on our way into KS we can stop and check it out. Hope all are doing well. Can't wait to see you in OR!

Greetings from PA

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to send a little message letting everyone know we are somewhere outside New Scanton (sp?), PA. We got to a Choice Inn around 10:30PM and crashed. I've been going non stop since finals week and FINALLY got a good night sleep. We are a little slow getting out of here today. We wanted to leave at 8AM, which is in one minute but dad is still in the shower and we haven't eaten our free contential breakfast. Oh well. Today we plan on meeting up with a woman dad mentored at Nike who now works for Victoria Secrets and her new husband and check out the Motorcyle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington, OH. Then drive until we get tired again. We did over 400 miles yesterday from 3-10PM. Hopefully we will get farther today.

I'm also thinking about joining a female roller derby league this summer. Good way to work out, make new friends, and work out some agression don't you think? Less stress on my shoulders than swimming. If anyone knows anything about this sport let me know. Thanks!

Hope everyone is doing well. Message me and let me know what you are up too.

Family Day

After surviving on less than 5 hours of sleep while at the Bahamas every day and only getting about 6 hours last night. Right now I am getting up and getting dressed because I GET TO SEE MY PARENTS TODAY! I haven't seen them since January 3rd (dad) and January 10th (mom). And I am super pumped. Not only that but I get to see my little brother (I haven't seen him since spring break) and my grandparents from both my mom and dad sides. We have a busy day ahead of us. I have to go pick up my mom and brother from the airport. Drop my brother off at my aunt's house to hang out for the afternoon and meet my dad who is driving up from CT with his parents to head to Baccalaureate. The actual ceremony I am getting honored with two certifications. Service-Learning and Civic-Leadership. We also have to go to a major/minor celebration for management. After Baccalaureate we are having a group dinner with a whole bunch of family then early to bed since tomorrow is graduation!

So I won't be able to officially call my mom and wish her a Happy Mother's Day. So if anyone wants to call her or email her she would love it and I would really appreciate it. She is an awesome mother and I really lucked out when God made me in her!

Mom if you read this. Happy Mother's Day!

Love always Jenna

See you in less than a week. And don't tear up when you read this! :)

Roommates are Gone

My roommates moved out today. So I'm all alone. I started cleaning up and organizing stuff. I bought an external hard drive today - very exciting. And finalized my Oregon graduation party list. Very productive day.

Tomorrow is my last day lifeguarding. And hopefully more packing...

DONE DONE DONE!

It's official I'm done with college! Guess I need to come up with a new title for my blog...

Suggestions?

Getting Closer...

Just submitted my MK 402 final, which is due tomorrow. So that once I finish my MK 343 final tonight I will be COMPLETELY DONE! T-minus 10 hours and counting until my final starts. Ah, that is so far away...

Tomorrow's Final

Tomorrow (well technically today since it is past midnight) is my last final of my collegiate career. Too bad it is a for night class - which means the final is at 6:30PM and it is going to be pretty easy (hopefully). Weird to think I will be done tomorrow...

Goals for Today

Here are my goals for the day:
  1. Finish studying chapters 6-10 in Salesforce Management
  2. Pack one box for my aunt's house (mostly winter clothes, blankets, and books)
  3. Maybe see a movie - is there anything good out now?
  4. Get to bed early - more lifeguarding and studying tomorrow.
What are your goals today?

Quirks

My friend Jenni, by way of my newer friend Crystal started blogging about their funny quirks. So instead of studying for my final I thought I should start brainstorming some of my own. Here is what I got so far:
  1. I have to write thank you notes after each present I receive for Christmas, Birthdays, etc. or I can't open my next present - this got so bad my parents started hiding mixed presents under different parts of the tree.
  2. I need to wash my hands after I touch anything.
  3. My room can be a completely mess but I know exactly where everything thing is, however, anything outside of my room needs to be completely organized or I am lost.
  4. I need to be completely wrapped in "Puff" (my blanket) to sleep.
  5. I don't sleep with any pillows. I also don't own any which makes it really hard to have sleep over parties.
  6. I still sleep with a stuff animal, Teddy Betty, which I got on my first Christmas. He doesn't have a face any more and I take him on business trips.
  7. When I'm home for the summer or Christmas break I usually sleep in my mom's bed more times then I sleep in my own.
  8. I hate unpacking, but love packing stuff up.
  9. I enjoy crossing things off lists.
  10. I enjoying popping zits, especially on other people.
  11. My toenails always have to be painted. If they chip I will redo them all.
  12. I never brush my teeth at night unless I drank soda that day.
  13. I have to crack my entire body when I wake up in the morning and consistently throughout the day.
  14. I have to call both my parents and tell them I love them before I get on a plane. Even if this requires waking them up at 3AM.
  15. I have to go to the bathroom before getting on any mode of transportation, bus, train, plane, or car.
  16. When I get nervous I start scratching my left hand by my bottom thumb knuckle or the tops of my shoulder blades.
  17. I get nervous that one day I'm going to take off all the hairs on my eyebrows every time I pluck them in an attempt to get them to match that I need someone to watch me do it.
  18. I hate shaving, and will go months without doing it.
  19. I still hate wearing shorts where strangers can see the scar on my leg, but I love wearing swimsuits in public.
  20. I hate that college now makes me feel like I have to wear makeup and underwear everyday.
What are some of your quirks?

Sick

So, I'm officially sick. On a Z Pack and so is my roommate. I'm feeling a bit nauseas which is a little weird. Hopefully it will go away soon. I'm hanging out at my aunt's house right now. Needed to get some laundry done. So I'm feeling productive while hanging out home alone watching The Incredibles on Disney Channel. Good movie. I've seen it before. My aunt and family are at Oliver, which both my cousins are in. I was hoping to go today, but I just wasn't feeling up to it. So I'm just taking it easy. My roommates are stuck in their room studying for a final they have tomorrow so I would probably just be hanging out in my room trying to be quiet. On the bright side, I am getting a ton of FREE laundry done. It cost $3/load at school. And I took a final today - no more Lewis & Clark ever again. And submitted another final for my Monsters and Madmen in Lit and Film that is due tomorrow morning at 9AM. I'm now down to one final of my college career that is Tuesday at 6:30PM. So I have a ton of time to study, which is nice. That is pretty much my life right now. Everything seems to be under control. All I need is for this sickness to go away. I leave for the Bahamas in 8 days!

Reading Day

So I think I have a cold. Which is a bummer cause it is finals week and I'm going to the Bahamas in a 10 days. So pray that this cold goes away. On a positive note, I bought my cap and gown today!

MicroBikeUSA

Want to check out something cool - MicroBikeUSA! Three of my swimmer friends, Tyler Heishman, Freddy Piumelli, and Bryan Stinchfield are riding their bikes from the East Coast all the way to San Francesco this summer to raise awareness for microfinancing. "We are looking to experience the country from a unique perspective. Along the way, we will advocate a sustainable technique to fighting poverty: microfinance. By issuing small loans, microfinance allows the poor to work their way out of poverty." They are going to be blogging throughout their trip. I added them to my list of blogs that I'm following. Definitely check them out and support them if you can!

Last Day of College

Today is my last day of classes here at Bentley College. I can't believe this day is finally here. It feels surreal.

Tonight

Tonight was an interesting night. After water polo I was feeling very productive and was planning on finishing up my 6 page reflection for service learning for the semester, which isn't due until Friday, however, I have class with my professor tomorrow and thought it would be good to get it over with now so I can focus more time on my other finals later on in the week. Instead, I ended up having an intense, hour-long conversation with one of my ex's. It was good. I got some things off of my chest. While completely confusing Nick, I'm hoping he will take to heart what I had to say and maybe we can talk about it some more once he has done some processing. Hopefully in the near future. I teared up a bit but nothing to crazy. I'm lucky to have friends around me for hugs and encouraging words. I hung out with my roommates for a bit afterwards, doing homework and listening to worship music. A good ending to a tough conversation. And now it is 2:18 AM and I'm going to still try and bust out as much of this paper as I can before I have to get up at 7:40AM to lifeguard.

On a side note, I did manage to pack my all my kitchen stuff up. Yeah for being productive this afternoon!

Productive Last Night

Last night I was very productive. Which is good and helps with the whole freaking out about college thing. I spoke at church yesterday as per my previous posts. But I also finished my MK 402 final group project as well as my individual project. Some of which I posted here on my blog. I also watched Crash (which is an amazing movie if you have never seen it, I would encourage you to) for my Monsters and Madmen in Lit and Film class. Our final "text" for the course. Hopefully today in class we will get our final questions so sometime this week I can write two essays and finish up another course. I also spent sometime yesterday wrapping up my college life. Writing thank you notes for all the super presents I got after speaking at church as well as thank you presents for my extended family that I am planning on giving out after my graduation. Today I have 3 final classes. My last meeting with my RD. Water polo practice and maybe a nap. Should be a good day.

If anyone has seen Crash, please share your thoughts! Thanks!

Jenna Forstrom Video Resume 2008

Does this seem like me? Thoughts? Comments?

Speaking @ Church Today

So I didn't play the Godtube video. But encourage all of you to check it out. And we only sung "To the Ends of the Earth." But all in all it went very well. I still think I need to work on my public speaking skills, I tend to talk too quickly and job around a lot. But I believe my testimony is very chaotic - goes along well with my life but also very open and personal. Also like me. Some things I got out of it listening to other speak was very interesting stuff about love.

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." - 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8

Then Manny (another speaker) went on to talk about love for everyone:

"But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful." - Luke 6:27-36

I think these are very important words that we should all focus more one. Rather then spending so much time and energy on being mad at others.

Speaking today and hearing the other students speak made me realize how lucky I am to have such an awesome support group here on campus. From my roommates, to my friends, to my Bible study, to the staff here on campus both in and out of the Spiritual Life Center. God was truly looking out for me when He sent me to Bentley College.

Speaking @ Church Today!

Today I am speaking at my church here at Bentley College. All the seniors get the opportunity to speak today at a service called "Cloud of Witnesses". It is a pretty big honor and a lot of my friends (even my non-Christian) are coming to listen to me speak. I wrote up a basic outline about what I am going to talk about. Thought I would post it here so everyone could see. I'll let you guys know how it really went later on today. Let me know if you have any questions/thoughts. Thanks!

I picked my top three worships songs (I was really tempted to do Papaya song since that was the first song I ever heard at church. However, it isn't that mature.) I did choose Indescribable, Ends of the Earth, and The Stand.

I'm also tempted to show the Godtube video about the play with the girl. Still debating that one.

Anyways, here is my speech. Enjoy and COMMENT!

Introduction – Jenna Forstrom, Beaverton, Oregon

Major/Plans After College – Marketing with a minor in Management and International Studies. No real plans for after college, but I hope to working in either corporate social responsibility and ethics or at a non-profit doing marketing.

How did you become a Christian – In 8th grade after attending a membership class at my church. Did not really take it to heart until sophomore year of high school, grew from there. Story about my ear. Exodus 21:6 “Then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to a door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.”

How the Lord helped me through Bentley – How didn’t he help me? I was in a really serious relationship and that ended, He was there. My parents announced their separation He was there. I owe Him a lot.

Words of Wisdom – Get involved on campus. You own it for 4 years and then it is gone. Do not worry about jobs/internships, Bentley is the only place I know that cares so much. Remember, if things feel weird or uncomfortable, that it’s okay we are not from this world. Hebrews 11:13 “All these people were living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted they were aliens and strangers on earth. It’s okay to take it slow. Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God.” And it’s okay to be mad at God. Don’t hold that anger in. Let it out – you heal faster when you are honest.

Spread the Bread

I got an unusual email from a lady who has been reading my blog and is involved in an organization called Spread the Bread. She sent me an email about getting involved. However, I am super busy right now and can't. But I thought I would post a link to their website so other people can get involved. Let me know what you think.

Stressed!

Here is what I have to do between now and May 8th:
  1. Finish all my finals and group projects
  2. Work 20+ hours/week
  3. Pack up my entire life and make sure it fits in my Volvo station wagon
  4. Pack for the Bahamas and graduation
  5. Wrap up all my extra curricular stuff
  6. Keep my sanity
So I'm a bit stressed out. So most of my blogs will probably be complaining or sharing pointless information that will make me feel better. Hope you enjoy it. Comment too please - makes me feel like the world is okay. Here is what I did today:
  1. Wrote my BCLP reflection paper - posted most of it on my blog. That is good. The final certificates and such I get are presented on May 16. My parents should be there with me....hopefully (just other thing to stress out about).
  2. Wrote my final service learning reflection journal - I still have to write my final 6 page paper for that - hopefully I will do that this weekend.
  3. Went shopping and got my thank you presents for my family - I still need to wrap them and write notes - hopefully doing that this weekend too.
  4. Almost finished my MK 402 final - emailed it to my professor she is going to send me comments tomorrow. I still need to add a Youtube resume and a generic cover letter. Hopefully I will finish that before 1PM tomorrow (before work) so I can turn it in on Monday and be done with MK 402 so I can focus on my other three finals.
Ah, that feels better.

Bentley Civic Leadership Program

Want to know what I have been doing with the last four years of my life. On top of going to school. Here you go. Here is the basic paper for my reflection for the Bentley Civic Leadership Program. Let me know what you think.

1. Campus Involvement: Being involved here at Bentley Campus is something that has always been important to me. I was on the Varsity Swim Team for three years, my sophomore year, a group of friends and I decided that Bentley would benefit from a water polo club and went through the formal recognition process, I became the Co-Founder and Vice President of the Bentley Water Polo Club, which now scrimmages against other local colleges and sponsors Float-A-Boat on Spring Day. My junior year I became the marketing and public relations e-board chair for Bentley Christian Fellowship, an organization I have been involved with since my freshman year that offers weekly Bible studies, fellowship and the Annual Easter Banquet. Also during my junior year, I applied and became a resident assistant working in Kresge, providing peer support and programs for the past two years. I have also been a work study student since my freshman year working as a lifeguard down at the Dana Center Pool and as an Event Staff Supervisor, working at the 1917 Tavern and various events put on by Greek Life, CAB, and ISA.

Civic Engagement: Service-Learning was introduced to me during my freshman year in my IT101 class with Professor VanderClock, when I was working with students at a local elementary school with the America Clicks program. Since then I have done a service-learning project almost every semester of my collegiate career. From doing an alternative spring break with Habitat for Humanity with Lynne Johanson and other Bentley students, to working with a local Y.M.C.A. on how to better run their programs in an embedded management course, to working with local elementary school students again with ELL Learners. Finally, my senior year, I have had the opportunity to work at the Watertown Boys and Girls Club for the entire year in their Homework Help Room. Also has a resident assistant I have had the chance to work with various organizations on campus to plan and encourage my residents to attend many cultural events happening on campus.

Ethical and Socially Responsible Behavior: I believe that acting ethically and being socially responsible are very important characteristics to have in a human being. While we all make mistakes, learning from those mistakes and growing is the more important thing. As a resident assistant it is very important to act ethically and show social responsibility, since you live in a fishbowl where your residents, other students on campus, fellow resident assistants, head residents assistants and resident directors are watching your every move. After I leave Bentley I hope to set a good example of what it means to be ethical and a socially responsible role model to the community in which I live and work.

2. Other than surviving college on the East Coast, 3,000 miles away from my family and graduating. I would have to say my biggest accomplishment here on a campus would have to be becoming a resident assistant. After a long application process and tough interviews, I made it! I became a resident assistant because my sophomore year I had no idea who my own resident assistant was and that worried me. I wanted to create an environment like a home on my floor where everyone knew one another and felt welcomed to be there. I believe I have achieved that over my two years of being a resident assistant. Being involved in many organizations on campus has thought me how to manage my time well and how to get more involved in my community. When I graduate and start work in the real world I plan on becoming very involved where I work. I do not want to be one of those employees who shows up to work, does their job, then leaves. I want to be engaged, have the chance to meet other people in different departments and make a difference. I also plan on doing more community service activities when I graduate. I did them before I came to college, as a care group leader at my church working with 8th grade girls and doing various service projects. Therefore, I plan on doing more after school. Hopefully, I will be making more money than I am now and will have more time to spare and therefore make a bigger impact.

3. For me, as a civic leader, I think my biggest challenge will be to get too involved in too many projects. I have a big heart and I want to save the world. In earlier years, I struggled with over commitment something I believe I have gotten better at over my four years of here at Bentley. But I know I’m not perfect. This also goes along with knowing which battles are worth the fight and which ones are not. Sometimes you need to pick and choose, something I am not very good at. Another challenge I can foresee is having the courage to speak up. I know now as a senior I am at the top of the food chain so it is easy to have a voice here on campus. However, once I graduate, I will probably have some entry level job where I will be back at the bottom and while I am a very outgoing person, in new environments I tend to take my time to figure out how things work before getting involved.

Website

I have to create a website about my personal brand. My goal is to get it done by Monday so I can be done with this class before the final. Ideally, I could get it done tonight that would be great. I'm not holding my breath though.

This is what I have so far:

I'm graduating from Bentley College in May, so I feel like I do not have that many profession experiences. However, I do feel like I have some experience (check out my resume and previous work for examples). This is what I am looking for in a future job:

1. A marketing job (back up management job).
2. A job outside of New England (West Coast or International preferably)
3. Something in Non-Profit (or Corporate Social Responsibility/Sustainability)

In a dream world I would like to work for a foundation that focuses one the needs of pre-teen girls in developing countries. I would like to have a home (with a lot of land, near a river and the ocean) in the United States but have the chance to be abroad for long periods of time, about 3 to 6 months at a time.

Life Update

Haven't been in the mood to blog for awhile. It's getting down to the wire with graduation just around the corner. This weekend was super nice 70ish degree weather and a long weekend. MA residents have this crazy Monday holiday called Patriot's Day. No school and Marathon Monday! So I had a nice 5 day weekend and only two days of school this week. Hopefully I can get some work done since finals start next week. Anyways here is a brief update on my life.

Saturday I went to the Boston Beer Summit - learned a lot, got to try a lot of beer, and won some cool prizes, stickers, pint glasses, shirts, etc. I'm such a college student - free stuff and I am there.

Sunday was Bentley's Senior Club night, we went to Club Felt in downtown Boston and I had a great time. Danced for like 4 hours. And I wore a new dress (shocking) and got a lot of compliments. The down side was I decided it would be a good idea to lift Sunday morning, in which I did lunges and squats add that to the high heels and dancing that night - my legs are now killing me! Oh well. I'll live.

Here are some updates about graduation:
  1. I'm speaking at my church on Sunday for Senior Recognition's "Cloud of Witnesses." I wrote out my speech on Thursday night and will post it up after my talk - my roommates read my blog and I don't want to spoil it.
  2. I am getting a Service Learning Award thing (120+ hours of community service) for graduation. I still have to update my hours, write my final journal entry, and final paper for this.
  3. I am also getting a Bentley Civil Leadership Award thing at graduation too. Thus I need to write a 3-5 page paper about my experience here for the past four years.
  4. I still have to finish up my 5 classes so I can actually graduate. Crazy!
  5. Plus, I have to pack up and move and prepare for my cross country road trip with my dad.
  6. And I have to get ready for the Bahamas - I leave in like a week and a half.
That is basically my crazy life. I could go on longer - but I don't want to bore you or sound like I'm complaining. I love working under pressure.

Free Book

Yesterday in my Marketing and Social Media class we had a guest speaker, Mike Proulx, VP of Social Media at Digital Influence Group, who talked to us about what real marketing companies are doing with social media. This gives me hope that I can find a job I will love. Another important thing is that he gave our entire class copies of his boss' book "Marketing to the Social Web: How Digital Customer Communities Build Your Business" by Larry Weber. Can't wait to start reading it. However, this will probably not happen until my road trip. But if you have read it or want to borrow it from me later. Let me know.

Religion Paper Update

I am writing a paper on religion for my managing diversity class. I had to interview one person from my religion, my roommate Jackie, and one person from a different religion, my friend Shekib who is Muslim.

One of the paper's questions is: What did you learn about yourself, related to diversity (from both your self-interview and your conversations)? This is what I came up with:
"While doing this assignment I became very aware of all the messages I have acquired over the years from my church, my friends, and my community. I was really surprised at the number of messages I had acquired compared to those that Jackie and Shekib had heard. While interviewing them, I shared what I had learned during my self interview and they seemed to be surprised as well. I began to wonder why I had received more messages than my interviewees and my conclusion is that this was because I had spent so much of my middle and high school years in the church. Not only did I go to church on Sundays, but I went to the student church service, Bible study, camps, mission trips, and was a leader in my church. Through these experiences I was exposed to so much more aspects of religion, aside from the Bible, I was taught what my church believes a good Christian woman is above reproach. Not until doing this assignment did I come to this heightened sense of awareness."

It Never Gets Old

Amusing thought for the day. So the Bentley pool, where I have been lifeguarding at for four years now, ladies locker room just got a make over. One of the new installations is a machines that almost completely dries your wet swim suit. Most "nicer" gyms have this little contraption. You put a wet swim suit in. Hold down the lid, there is a bit of rumbling and then 10 seconds later - Wa-la! Dry suit! The wrung out water falls out of the machine into a little bucket at the bottom. I usually sit there and watch the water fall out in complete awe. But this morning I was walking into work and this old lady (around grandmother age) was watching the fall into the bucket and she dried her suit! I love it. No matter how old you get the simplest things still amuse us!

What amuses you?

The Last Lecture

Today was RA Appreciation Day. So I woke up to a balloon tied to my door. My RD, Erin, made a delicious dinner for our staff. At the end of our RA meeting, Erin showed us a video called The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon professor who is dying of pancreatic cancer. It was a really moving lecture and I thought you guys would enjoy it. Please take a couple of minutes, watch the video, and let me know what you think.

Twitter

I was thinking I should post my twitter account info here so that people could fine me easier. I plan on using Twitter a lot for my cross country road trip with my dad since I doubt I will have internet access most of the time. Let me know what you think. Or if you have Twitter so I can follow you!

19 Classes Left

My friend pointed out today that I only have 19 class left in my collegiate career. Grad school anyone?

Breakfast:
  • 2 pieces of whole wheat toast with hummus and cucumbers
  • 1/2 grapefruit
  • bowl of Life cereal (I should have skipped this)
  • 1 glass of water
  • 1 glass of apple juice

Weekend Update

This weekend was pretty busy:
  • Thursday I worked all night
  • Friday I was on duty and had a friend who graduated last year sleep over
  • Saturday I went to Sam Adams and did their brewery tour with some friends!
  • Sunday I chopped off all my hair again - back to the old school high school pixie cut which I love. I don't think my rather conservative business school friends will like it. But I LOVE IT!
I decided last night I need to start keeping a food journal to keep track of the foods I'm eating. In hopes of becoming more healthy. I'll try to keep you guys posted on how that goes. Today I eat:
  • 1 small, Currito Soy Smoothie, with mangoes instead of strawberries
  • Couscous w/veggie mix of carrots, bell peppers, garbanzo beans, and pine nuts
  • Turkey wheat wrap with lettuce, tomatoes and pickles
I'm trying to drink more water and keep better track of what I do for excersize. Today I:
  • did an ab workout
  • swam for an hour

Unmotivated

Feeling a bit unmotivated today.
  1. It could be because I did not get that much sleep last night due to a sleep over party with my friend Jade. Whenever her boy friend is gone she sleeps over. She called me "her full time friend and part time lover". I just enjoy the company.
  2. It could be because my knee is hurting - not really sure why that is. But it is definitely swollen though.
  3. It could be because it is super warm and sunny out right now. (I'm currently sitting on a picnic table attempting to do work).
  4. It could be because I'm two weeks away from being done with school and have senioritis... most likely.
I do have some work to do. However, it is simple everyday homework, so I'm not ready to do it just yet.

I have 9 minutes to kill before I need to get back to work. I'm working a lot today - surprised? 10AM - 2PM - lifeguarding, 3:30-4:30PM - lifeguarding, [dinner meeting @ 5PM], 7PM-1AM event staff. But it's good cause I'm poor and need to pay the bills.

I'm going to try and do what Kristin and Traci do, write a long list of things I'm thinking about:
  • I need lotion for my legs
  • I need a nap
  • I need a haircut
  • I love the sun
    • I love flip flops
      • I need to buy more flip flops
  • I love my friends who still call/email with me even though I'm 3,000 miles away
  • I hope I can do a roadtrip with BK this summer to her new home
  • I hope Jade figures out her life
  • I'm excited to go to Beer Summit next weekend
  • I should be doing work
  • I wonder what will happen after this summer
    • I should care more about what happens
  • Every time I watch trees sway it reminds me of Phenomenon - it really is relaxing
  • I should work out more
    • But my knee hurts
  • I'm sad my softball team lost last night
    • I wish Traci could come visit
      • But I'm excited that we might have future baseball plan
Not very exciting stuff. I'll try harder next time. Back to work!

God Knows

God knows when you need a little personal pick-me-up. He knows that I really needed one today after a rough weekend and little sleep last night. It came in the form of a long time best friend and older brother, Jon Grotz (the one on the right), whom I haven't spoken to in a couple of months. He made my day today and put me in a mood way better than I ever expected to be in today.

What God is Teaching Me This Week

I've been spending a lot of time reflecting on my life, due to some unusual circumstances that have arose. Long story. But here is what God has revealed to me this week:
  1. I really need to work on loving myself more. I had a long Google chat conversation with my friend Traci and while I will be the first one to admit I have huge issues with love. She really opened my eyes to the fact that I need to work on loving myself better. I've already forgiven myself for stuff in the past, now I need to work on acting like I love myself. I need to work on treating myself better:
  • Not overworking myself at the gym
  • Eating healthier
  • XXXXXXXX XXX XXXXXX XX XXXXXXXXXX X XXX XX XX XXXX
  1. The second thing I've learned this week is that I really need to work on remembering to call upon and rely on God's power and strength when I'm going through harder times in my life. I did pretty good this week - but there is definitely room for improvement.

Diversity Identity Paper Assignment: Religion

I'm taking a managing diversity class and we have to write a paper on diversity identity on a topic of our choice (race, sexual orientation, nationality or religion). I'm choosing religion, since it is something that is a huge part of my life. I have to interview myself, which is weird, a friend who shares the same religion as I do, (future shout out to Jackie, my roommate, for letting me interview her) and my friend and fellow RA Shekib, who is Muslim.

I'm currently working on the personal interview and some of the questions are interesting to answer, because, for the most part, my time here at Bentley I have felt like the only practicing "real/good" Christian among my friends. So I wonder how my professors are going to take to reading my paper. The way it is structured it seems as though they assume you were born into your religion. Which I wasn't, so that is slightly odd for me to write from that perspective (although I can see how you are born into other things like race).

There was another question that was interesting to me: How would you describe the current climate in the setting you share in relation to you religion? What does that mean? I wrote, "good, a little worried for what God has in store for me after graduation." However, I do not feel as though that is a collegiate paper response.

Just my thoughts for now...

6 Weeks And Counting...

Just thought I would make a quick little post. My life is so crazy right now with school work, work work, friends (and drama) that is hard to find time to actually post thoughtful and insightful stuff. I am having a hard enough time finding time to stop and process my life as it. Not to mention writing about it. Although, on the graduation front this week I received:
  1. My first alumni newsletter - that was shocking, I'm not yet out the door and they are already sending me stuff about my Year 0 reunion in October....
  2. My paperwork for my cap and gown
Interesting life stuff has come up the past week. If anyone is really interested call me. I don't think I'm ready to actually post it up here yet.

LinkedIn

Haven't posted in awhile. Been caught up catching up on homework and working a three day celebration of the inagoration of our 7th president here at Bentley. Kirk's visit was very insightful. While I loved spending time with him, I also became aware how separate we are from one another, and how much we are still healing from our parents separation (although in very different ways). But it was great to see him. We had a blast going to basketball games and just hanging out on campus.

Side comment. Does anyone use Twitter or LinkedIn?

Kirk is Coming Today!

My "little" brother, Kirk, is coming to visit me for his Spring Break. I say "little" because as many of you know he is over a foot and a half taller than me. However, I am three years older than him. I'm super excited to have him visiting. Hopefully, he will get a better idea about what college is and have some fun. He seems to be struggling (as I think a lot of freshman do) so please pray for him. Here is our agenda for the week.

Saturday: Hang out/dinner.
Sunday: Celebrate Easter and my mom's sister's (Auntie M) house with her family.
Monday: Go to the Celtics v. 76ers game with my two friends Dave and Adrian.
Tuesday: Nothing "fun" planned. I need to work on that.
Wednesday: Go to Springfield, MA (1.5 hours away) to watch Bentley play in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight Game.
Thursday: Kirk heads back home in the AM.

How Blogging Has Hepled In Africa

First of all I finally figured out how to add a title. Hopefully, that will make things more easier. Second, I posted this blog for my MK 402 class, but loved it so much that I decided to post it here as well since most of you guys are interested in humanitarian work. I encourage all of you to check out all the links within this article - very cool stuff happening in our world.

I found that Israel’s article “A Talk on Kenyan Violence, Hope, and Social Media” to be very interesting. Not only does it talk about international social media, but as how social media is helping NGOs. Something we have been spending a lot of time in class discussing. In this article, Israel interviews Erik Hersman, an American who grew up as a missionary kid in Sudan and Kenya. Hersman works as an application developer and web consultant at Zungu. More importantly, I believe, for this article and humanitarian efforts globally, he was the principle developer of Ushahidi, a history-makin wiki that allowed Kenyans to generate geographic information on where violence was occurring in their county. Ushahidi, meaning “witness” in Swahili, was created after a blog post by Ory Okolloh, who stated how useful it would be to have a citizen-generated report of the violence in Kenya, since normal news sources were not report all that was going on. Kenyans can send in reports via SMS, email, or through the website and they are plotted on the map. Additionally, images, video links, and additional information can be added to the system. All the information first goes through a verification process, conducted by volunteers at Ushahidi. I believe that the most important aspect of Ushahdi is that it has created a new type of website within the humanitarian sphere for crisis events. Kenyans and NGOs are hoping to duplicate this type of tool in other areas of the world that are dealing which crisis.

Other things Israel and Hersman discussed was the role of social media during the violence. Hersman mentioned how Juliana Rotich used Twitter, Flickr, and her blog to keep everyone in Kenyan updated. Other bloggers, including Ory Okolloh, Daudi Were and Joseph Karoki, provided the service of keeping the world updated with images and news.

While Africans struggle with producing decent websites, social media is helping them in two ways, one, it allows individuals to circumvent ineffective government and social regulations. And two, it allows companies a chance to leapfrog past their competitors who are unaware of the feedback loop provided by social media. As for international companies who want to do business in Africa, social media helps them monitor information through blogs and old-fashioned message boards. Additionally, organizations are contacting African bloggers, who are experts in a particular field, for direct input on specific issues. (This sounds a lot like the same stuff that is happening globally).

Additional social media sites in Africa include: Afrigator, Mzalendo, Muti, and Mxit.

I found this article to be very interesting. The only way would have improved it was maybe by adding specific facts about social media in Africa. How many bloggers there are? How many cellphone users are in Africa? How many internet cafes? I think Ushahidi sounds like a great program and I would love to hear more about it and how it will be used in a different place in the world for dispensing information about a crisis. As someone who is thinking about going into the Peace Corp, or planning on working with NGOs at some point in my life. Information about bloggers and crisis assistances would be extremely important for not only me, but my family living in the States to be able to track where I am in regards to crisis.

Has this ever happened to you? I had a phone conversation with someone who I used to consider my best friend and brother. But our lives are at completely different places and our futures aren't very certain. And as I hung up the phone, I realized, that this was probably the last time I would talk to this kid again. Strangely enough, I wasn't upset. I don't know which is worse, knowing I probably won't talk to him again or not feeling bad about it. Anyways, has anyone else experienced this, or part of it? Let me know.
I was tagged (by default - but whatever)! Teehee!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I went to South Boston "Southie" yesterday to watch the annual parade and had a blast hanging out. I've never done it before and since it's my last year (more like last couple of months) here in Boston I thought I should go check it out. Some of the highlights include:
  • watching people wait 20 minutes to get into a liquor store because the shops were at capacity
  • there was a whole Star Wars section in the parade - I'm not sure what Star Wars has to do with being Irish or St. Patrick's Day but it definitely made my day!
I also attended Palm Sunday service. Started getting me in the mood for Easter. I finally figured out how the make crosses out of palms, which was interesting. I made a couple during the day for some friends as well.

I've been really struggling to read my Bible the last couple of weeks. I feel like it is more of a chore than anything. However, last night I decided to read all four "Triumphant Entries" from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. And came across one of my all time favorite Bible verses: "I tell you, he replied, if I keep quiet, the stones will cry out." Luke 19:40. I think I need to focus on that more throughout my daily life. Good verse to keep by my heart during Holy Week.

Spring Break: Update! This picture is from Xcaret Park (see below).

I'm back from Spring Break - very relaxed and tan. I want to do a couple of blogs but here is the general overall one. Things I need to talk more about:

How much I hate American Airlines

And thus barely made the cruise - the boat left at 4PM - we got there at 3:48 (they had to re-open the gate to let us on)

Reading Naked Conversations by Shel Israel and Robert Scobl
I also finished Grendel by John Gardner (which I was supposed to read two weeks ago...)

Going to Xcaret

Swimming with Stingrays in Grand Cayman

I'm also very curious to hear what other people did/are doing for their Spring Breaks? What about after college - are they just called vacations? I don't know what I am going to do. I'm already planning post-college vacations!

Spring Break:

Tomorrow starts my Spring Break journey. However, first I am going to attend NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship - NE -10! Which is taking place here at Bentley - and Bentley is set to win! GO FALCONS! Then:

  1. I'm driving to Manchester, NH to meet up with Julie, my fellow Spring Breaker.
  2. Take a Greyhound bus from Hartford, CT to NYC at 12:30 AM.
  3. Taxi to the airport.
  4. Airplane to Miami.
  5. Taxi to the port!
  6. RELAX for the next 5 days!
Please pray for me and my friend Julie, for safe travels and a fun time. I also tend to get wicked anxious right before I fly so please pray especially for that.

My goals for Spring Break:
  • Catch up on sleep!
  • Read my book for class
  • Fun read
  • Hang out with Julie
  • Get a good tan
  • Have fun exciting adventures
  • Meet some cool new kids

I haven't been in the mood to blog for awhile now. Which is weird. I usually have tons of stuff I want to get out there. However, I've been working a lot AND been trying to get ahead of my school work so I can really enjoy my spring break. Which started yesterday! But I do have a couple of announcements:
  1. My younger brother, Kirk, might come to visit me for his spring break (in like two weeks)!
  2. My senior portraits arrived today! Graduation is getting closer. I have wallet sized photos if anyone wants any - let me know.
  3. My spring break cruise is so close, yet so far. I head down to CT on Saturday then leave really early Sunday morning.
Today, my goal is to get ahead in 3 classes (I've done 2 so far!) And get my laundry done. I am also working 4 hours today, driving students t0/from Service Learning, getting my car oil changed, watching Bentley play in the NE-10s semifinals, and attending Senior Pub Night. Busy girl I know!

Also, today my best friend, Beckie Kruse, is supposed to find out if she got a GA position and University of Florida. Her number one pick for grad school. She already got an offer from Auburn (her number 2), which isn't that bad. But she would still rather go to Florida. So keep her in your prayers.

Please pray for:

My mouth (more importantly - my tongue and my mind to control my thoughts and thus my tongue as well).

I don't like that I:
  • Swear
  • Exaggerate
  • Belittle people
  • Brag
Instead I want my mouth to only:
  • Encourage
  • Give blessings
